• Math Help

To watch a video about information design, including the graph shown in Example 4 (at about the 6:20 mark), watch the David McCandless video on "Information Is Beautiful."

• Consumer Suggestion

David McCandless, author of Information is Beautiful, also curates a website with the same title. On the site, you can find links to his book and more visual data.

• Checkpoint Solution

Here are some other observations that you can make about the area graph.

• The three largest peaks occur around the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
• The three small peaks at the beginning of the year occur around Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Valentine's Day, and Easter.
• Overall, box office revenue is higher during the summer than the rest of the year (except for the two peaks at the end of the year).

The most important observation that you can make from the area graph is that there is a strong correlation between box office revenue and holidays.
