    When balancing your checkbook, remember to subtract debits (expenses) and add credits (deposits).

    Most banks now offer free on-line banking to make balancing your checkbook much simpler. Here are a few common features of on-line banking:

    • check your available funds
    • transfer funds between accounts
    • automate bill payments, so that you never forget to make a payment

    Talk with a representative at your local bank to learn more about on-line banking and to see if your bank offers on-line bill pay.

    In order to write checks, you need to have a checking account. "Free checking" was once a common term used in reference to checking accounts with no additional maintenance fees.

    Banks have increased fees on accounts, including ATM and overdraft fees, and checking is increasingly straying away from free.
