Book Review

Great work in moving Quantitative Literacy past abstract theory into something useful and practical for students!

by Dr. Pete Markiewicz

Hi Ron:

I wanted to congratulate you on creating such an awesome book!

I'm an Instructor in Quantitative Literacy at the Art Institutes of California, Los Angeles, a design school specializing in animation, game art, video, web/interactive design, and culinary. Our current plan is to use your book for our Quantitative Literacy classes, starting in spring or summer quarter.

I've been waiting for a book like this for years.

What's great about the book:

  • I really like the focus on "non-algebra" - I have been using a similar approach for several years. It makes it easier to get students, particularly those afraid of math, working on the projects.
  • Connection of quantitative literacy with critical thinking, especially statements/comments in the media. This is EXACTLY what I feel quantitative literacy is about (more so than abstract concepts like set theory).

Thanks again for your great work in moving Quantitative Literacy past abstract theory into something useful and practical for students!
