    On page 206, the common definitions of direct tax and indirect tax are given. According to United States constitutional law, however, a direct tax usually means a tax on property. An indirect tax is usually a tax imposed upon a right or privilege, such as a franchise tax. Unless otherwise noted, whenever direct tax or indirect tax is mentioned in the text, use the definitions given on page 206.

    Excise taxes on liquor, gasoline, and cigarettes are examples of indirect taxes.
